The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a global network connecting millions of computers. It is a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers). More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. The Internet was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET. The original aim was to create a network that would allow users of a research computer at one university to be able to 'talk to' research computers at other universities. Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. There is a range of vocabulary that has been invented since the emergence of the Internet: SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), blogs, domains, directories, hosting, email and e-commerce are just a few words synonymous with the Net. When you're on the Net, your computer is connected to others by networks of telephone wire, cable and satellite. The Web, e-mail, chat and newsgroups are all things you can do on the Internet. It has become known as a 'global community' allowing you access to anywhere, anytime in the world. Categories Sort by: Hits | AlphabeticalRegular Links
