In its basic form, the word entertainment means a show put on for the enjoyment or amusement of others'. These 'others' - the audience - may participate in the entertainment passively such as when watching a film or opera or listening to a radio. Alternatively, they may become more involved in some form of active participation beyond just leisure such as in games and playing sport. The entertainment industry usually refers to the world of cinema, arguably with its strongest foundations in Hollywood. Here it has witnessed the birth of many great actors such as Al Pacino, Jodie Foster and Robert De Niro. Other forms of entertainment include animation, gambling, theatre, circus, comedy, music and dance. In recent years there has been a surge of popularity in home entertainment as technology becomes more accessible and affordable, such as DVD players, widescreen televisions, surround sound, Blu-Ray, high definition (otherwise known as 'HD') and cable television. Of course, entertainment needn't cost a penny and can be experienced in many different forms, whether via board games played as a group of people or thanks to an open-air concert in the local park.
