The term 'the arts' is composed of many expressive disciplines, including, but not limited to, music (instrumental and vocal), dance, drama, theatre, folk art, body art, creative writing, architecture, painting, antiques, sculpture, photography, visual arts, graphic and craft arts, industrial design, costume and fashion design, motion pictures, television, radio, film, video, tape and sound recording. It is related to the presentation, performance, execution, and exhibition of such major art forms. It is a broad subdivision of culture and in modern usage, it is a term broader than 'art' and usually means the visual arts such as those mentioned above. Newspapers often include a section on the arts. If you were to look at some broadsheets such as The Times, The Telegraph and The Guardian, they either dedicate their own supplement to the subject or incorporate a substantial section in the actual newspaper itself. In modern academia, the arts are viewed as a branch of learning and are usually classed as one of the Humanities, with other subjects being history, linguistics, literature, philosophy and women's studies.
